Grand Theft Auto: The Guide For San Andreas In Depth Guide For PS2

Parental Warning: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is not a game for children. The rating is MA which is meant for adults over the age of 18. The review for this game is loaded with language and suggestive words and also not meant for those under age 18. The reality is many children under the age of 18 do in fact play this game and are probably reading this review right now. That is between them and their parents. I cannot supervise children who read this review nor can I be in your living room to stop them. That is your job.

If you are a parent, at least be aware if your children are playing this game and set down boundaries for them. If you choose to let them play, make sure they know the difference between fantasy and reality, most children do understand the difference and would never do these things in real life. A handful of disturbed individuals, regardless of age, may be unduly influenced by this game. If you are responsible for such a person, please make sure they are not playing it.

Grand Theft Auto is a game that glorifies killing and general bad behavior including drugs and illicit sex. It is a game for sick degenerates who think it is funny, myself included. All of the Rockstar series of the Grand Theft Auto Games are rated MA.

If you do not want to hear the spoilers, go to the first GTA San Andreas strategy guide. If you don't mind the spoilers and it is your first time playing it, you may want to check out the first guide which tells you about the controls and other helpful basics.

Side Missions Part One

While you are waiting before the game gets really intense and before you go off to the other island, it is best to get some of these out of the way while you can. Some are required for 100% while others are not. You do not need to do any of these to further the missions if you only want to do the storyline. However, some of these will get you bonus skills that will only help you. If you just want to go along with the story without unnecessary tasks and don't care about getting 100%, forget about most of these side missions.

Gym (difficulty 0/10)

The first gym out of 3 you must visit. If you have enough muscle mass, you can approach the instructor to learn a new move. Otherwise, use the gym whenever you want to build muscle or increase stamina. If you got CJ fat, this is where you can go to work off those pounds.

To learn a new move, build up your muscle to 25% and approach the instructor. Beat him up until you win. He will then show you a new move you can use until you learn a new one later. Learn all the moves for 100%.

Lowrider Challenge (difficulty 2/10)

Not required for 100%, but a way to make extra money. Show up and meet the guy with your low rider and do exactly the same type of thing as the Cesar Vialpando mission. Bet the maximum amount and move your analog stick to the rhythm. Unless you really need the money or enjoy it, don't bother.

Betting Shop (difficulty 0/10)

Not required for 100%, but a way to make money. Do this any time you want extra cash.

Buy Property (difficulty 0/10)

If you haven't done so by now, you need to get these for 100%:

  • Willowfield - $10,000
  • Jefferson - $10,000
  • Marina/Verona Beach - $10,000
  • Mulholland - $120,000 - 1 car garage
  • Santa Maria Beach - $30,000 - 2 car garage
  • El Corona/Verdant Bluffs - $10,000 - 2 car garage

Taxi Driver (difficulty 1/10)

Drive 50 passengers to their drop off point on time and get the money. It doesn't have to be 50 in a row, but for each 5 you get in a row, you get a bonus. It is required for 100%, plus your taxis will all have nitros and the ability to jump when completed.

Vigilante (difficulty 4/10)

Grab a police car or a police bike and plenty of ammo for an automatic weapon. Make sure your shooting and driving skills are up high. Follow the blips on the map and keep shooting until they blow up while being careful not to get in trouble yourself. Continue through to level 12.

Hint: Use a motorbike as it is easier to shoot from a distance. High driving and shooting skills make it easier. Or use the glitch by going to a fast food place like the Pizza Stack and start the mission there. Get on and off the bike and in and out of the building until a capture has been made. Just get into the building and stand for a few seconds while slowly moving your left analog stick to get a slow view around the room. This causes the bad guys to drop off better. Get back on the bike before time runs out and repeat until done. Warning: This glitch tends to make your game freeze from time to time, so don't get too greedy and go past level 12 or you risk having to start all over.

Reward: 150 armor.

Fire Fighter (difficulty 3/10)

Grab a fire truck near the freeway, down the street to the west of the hospital. Get to the location of the fire as quickly as possible without getting in trouble. Aim the hose at the flame and shoot the water at the cars and the fleeing people. Make sure you don't kill them in the process or you fail the mission. Continue up to level 12.

Hint: Start the mission on the NW corner of the island in Red County, right after you leave Las Colinas. Make sure your driving skill is at least 20% completed so if your truck were to flip it has a better chance at getting back up. Starting the mission at this point makes it more likely that most of the fires will be out in Red County and along the freeway which means less traffic and interference. If your victim is close to a cliff or a body of water, try to aim your hose in a manner where you will not push them off.

Reward: Fireproof on foot. This will come in handy on a few missions, especially the last one.

BMX Challenge (difficulty 3/10)

Go to the skate board park across the street from the hospital and hop on the bike by the curved boards to activate. Use your skills to jump with the bike to get all the hoops on time.

Hint: Max your bike skills before you do this and it will be easy. Also, make sure CJ has no fat and stamina is way up which will make it easier for him to jump higher and peddle faster. Get the low lying rings first to build up your time. Tap X repeatedly to make him go faster and use the bunny hop to get the higher rings. Save the ones high on the curved boards for last after you have built up more time because those are tricky. There is one on a high curved board with a ledge, speed up, jump and do a stoppie at the edge to land the bike on the ledge close enough to get it. The other curved board with the two rings can be had by speeding up to it. The ones above the dug out areas can be reached by speeding to the edge and bunny hop to the ring.

Reward: Money and increased bike skill. Waste of time, but counts for 100%.

Roboi's Mart (difficulty 2/10)

Required asset to get 100%. A basic delivery with 4 levels. If you have a high bike skill and know your way around, this is easy, although aiming can be tricky at times. Tapping X repeatedly while doing the routes will get you around faster.

Level 1 - There are 3 points, 2 to the west of the mart and 1 to the east at the police station. Start with the northwest, peddle to the south, then quickly go east and return to the store.

Level 2 - Pull up your map and mark your trip to get to Market, Temple, Idlewood, Verdant Bluffs and back.

Level 3 - Pull up your map and mark your trip to get to the Conference Center, Verdant Bluffs, Idlewood, Pershing Square, Verona Beach and back.

Level 4 - Pull up your map and mark your trip to get to Santa Maria Beach Boardwalk, Santa Maria Beach lighthouse, Vinewood, Temple, East Beach, Playa Del Seville.

Reward: Roboi's Mart is an asset that gets up to $2000.

Pimping (difficulty 2/10)

This is required for 100%. By the gas station in Idlewood is a pimp car. Get in and press R3 to start. Pick up and deliver the girls and protect them through level 10. Be sure to route your travel to make it on time.

Reward: Girls pay you to have sex.

8-Track (difficulty 7/10)

At the stadium near CJ's house the event is open as soon as you have at least 10% driving skill. This is required for 100% and is one of the most frustrating races because it is so long. It will require practice to get a feel for the track and a fairly high driving skill to better your odds of surviving to the end.

Try and stay in the center and avoid the walls as this will wear your car out faster than anything else. The cars tend to not take very well to being hit and blow up easily. Avoid the packs as you hit the corners because they will pile up. If you stay behind the first few laps and avoid the crashes, you will have the advantage of a car that is better able to withstand the rest of the race. Take the lead when you see an opening before you hit a curve and floor it. If there is someone more stubborn up ahead, do a PIT move and make them spin out.

Reward: $10,000 + Monster and Hotring Racer now spawn in the NW corner of the stadium.

Appearance

CJ has access to clothing stores, hair stylists, and tattoo artists. How he looks will depend how much respect he has and his sex appeal. Not required for 100%, but it helps to make a stop when necessary.

Back to the missions!

Running Dog (difficulty 2/10)

CJ really looked up to Big Smoke as a role model and now that he is back is willing to hang around with him and catch up with his "running dog." Seems like he is up to something with the cops, but CJ doesn't push it as Tenpenny and Pulaski leaves Smoke's house. It seems they have a little errand to run, Smoke wants to pick up his "cousin" a sweet bud from Mexico, one available by the Mexican gangs in East Los Santos for a price. They want to give him a hard time and CJ needs to get even on Smoke's behalf.

Hint: Armor and any weapon of your choice. Run to catch up with him and shoot him down.

Reward: Respect. Plus you can steal the money from the dead guy.

Wrong Side Of The Tracks (difficulty 3/10)

Smoke had another visit from the law as CJ approached. It seems there is something waiting for them at Unity Station, but now Vargos and Northern Mexicans have teamed up. Smoke needs to do a drive-by at the train while CJ drives.

Hint: High bike skill. Don't bother shooting, just keep up with the train to the left and slightly behind the guys on top of the train so Smoke can shoot them. Avoid the car which will explode and the trains coming your way. Take the higher path road as you get near the country and keep up until all the guys are dead and return home.

Reward: Respect.

Just Business (difficulty 5/10)

Finally, a good challenge! Smoke warns CJ they will be getting into something serious, something that has to do with Russians. You have his back while in the building and he has your back as you shoot off those chasing you on bike. Try and make it alive without destroying the bike.

Hint: High shooting skills and armor needed. The first part is a breeze. Drive to the spot. Crouch and shoot. Pick up the spare armor and move on to the outside and shoot more guys. You will cut scene and be off on a bike where all of a sudden people are after you. Shoot them before they can do damage. Shoot the guys on the back of the motorcycle who are shooting you first, then shoot the tires and the leftover driver has little power over you. The truck will not be destroyed, but you should shoot the tires out to slow them down. The cars that chase you are best to quickly shoot the shooter through the window and blow up the car...time it so the car will blow up with other vehicles near it. Eventually, you will be near the tunnel drain you must shoot out. There are some explosive barrels nearby, take those out before you reach it so it doesn't hit you. As soon as you make it there, lose the remaining ones and you are done.

Reward: Respect

Doberman (difficulty 3/10)

Go to the Ammu-Nation and get any weapons you might need. You will go to the Ballas territory and start a gang war. Win it and take out the one responsible for the trouble and this area is yours.

Hint: Armor, lots of ammo and high shooting skills. Hitman will have a blast. Recruit gang members if you wish, but I think they tend to get in the way. Dodge behind something while you hit anything coming your way. There will be 3 waves of gangs. The first is very easy to pick off. The second will include a drive-by as well as more gang members. The third wave will have heavy weapons and a drive-by. Between the second and third waves you will be able to find extra armor and health, use it if you need it, or save it if you want it for later during the fight.

If you are fireproof and have a lot of moltov cocktails, lob them at the gangs and it goes by so quickly.

Reward: Respect and gang territories are open.

Los Sepulcros (difficulty 3/10)

Must be started between 9:00 and 17:00. Just like at his mother's funeral, the gang is planning to ambush this Ballas service and do a shoot out. You will recruit two gang members to accompany you. Kill Kane and take out other gang members and safely return your gang home whilst avoiding the cops.

Hint: Lots of ammo and armor with a hitman level. Crouch and shoot. If fireproof, hit Kane with a moltov cocktail to take him down faster. Get in the car with your gang and route your travel to the nearest Pay N Spray to lose the heat. Drive home and you're done.

Reward: Respect

Reuniting The Families (difficulty 5/10)

More fun! The gang is waiting for CJ to arrive to discuss plans to reunite the split up parts of the gang and remove the base from their streets. A meeting is to take place and Sweet appointed himself to represent them at the motel. CJ has to drive the group and is given a hard time, yet again, by Ryder. They get to the place and Sweet goes to meet up when all of a sudden cops come out from everywhere. CJ goes to save Sweet while Ryder and Smoke bolt. CJ needs to save his brother while being shot at and then shoot down the helicopter on the roof, meet up with Smoke and Ryder and shoot off cops chasing them without dying.

Hint: Have a hitman level in your AK47 as you will need it for manually aiming at the cars. You will need armor and plenty of ammo on the inside of the building (or fireproof and moltov cocktails.) Crouch and aim is the best way to get out of it alive. Rescue Sweet and go to the roof. Aim at the helicopter blades to get it to crash. Meet up with the car and Sweet will drive. Shoot the ones shooting at you, then worry about shooting the vehicle. The cars are not what's hurting you, the bullets are. If you kill the shooter first, that's less to worry about. Use the car still driving to act as a fireball when a few cycles are next to it and take them out at once. Don't remove your finger from the trigger. Keep aiming and shooting. If you have at least half the car health by the time you make it to the car wash, you will probably pass. When you go down the final alley, you will run out of the ability to shoot, this is followed by a cool cut scene followed by a permanent hole in a billboard.

Reward: Respect

Green Sabre (difficulty 3/10)

Now's the time to see who the real enemies are - Ryder and Big Smoke. As CJ and Sweet prepare to meet up, CJ gets a call from Cesar telling him to meet him immediately. CJ discovers Ryder and Smoke in an alleyway with Ballas and Tenpenny hiding the Green Sabre that was involved in the shooting of his mother. CJ realizes Sweet was set up and in a trap, so he goes to warn him, but his phone is off. CJ must rush to save his brother as Cesar promised to take Kendl away to safety. Time to say goodbye to this side of the island.

Hint: Armor, ammo and high shooting skills. Drive quickly before time runs out on Sweet. Dodge behind the cars and take them out as they come at you. When you get them, the cops come to raid the area.

Reward: Mission passed. Your brother is sent to a prison hospital. Your sister is with Cesar. The cops kidnapped you to the other island and orders you to stay away from Sweet while you do them a favor. You get to live on the outside, but you just lost all your weapons.

Secrets/Glitches/Special Exploits

Special Bulletins At WCTR - After certain missions, there will be breaking news on WCTR announcing things that just happened in your mission. Tune in periodically and listen to the news.

Special Bulletins At KDST - After certain drug related missions, the DJ will make a comment about it. Tune in periodically and listen.

Vigilante Glitch - Take a police motorcycle or car and go to a fast food place, the Pizza Shack works best. Start the mission right outside the door. Get out of your vehicle and step into the building. Wait awhile and go back to your bike before time is up. In between the time you get off your bike and the time you get back on, you will most likely have caught some bad guys. If not, just keep trying. Try not to get stuck as the game will sometimes freeze. Take it easy as soon as you step in the building. Do a slow rotation with your left analog stick so CJ will only look around the room. This seems to trigger the most bad guys you nab.

Best Spot For Ambulance Missions - As soon as you finish Green Sabre, Tenpenny and company will have you relocated to the other island in a small town called Angel Pines. It will keep you only in this small town if you start the mission in this area. There isn't very much traffic in comparison to the rest of SA. And once you get to level 6 you should have the map pretty much memorized as the people are closely found near each other making planning of the quickest route easy.

Re-spawning Weapons - In CJ's house, at the Four Dragon's Casino and the garage in San Fierro, when you have collected all tags, horseshoes, and photos, you will have weapons at these locations. Before you save, gather the weapons, save it, and the weapons will respawn. In CJ's house, just leave the kitchen, walk around to the tv and go back to the kitchen to find the weapons again. If you want to respawn the paint or camera in CJ's home, collect it before you save, go downstairs and save, then go back and collect the item you want.

Get Out Of Trouble - In some areas, it is harder to get to a bribe in time, especially if you are close to death. Get CJ to the nearest clothing store ASAP and buy a new outfit and all the stars will go away.

Standoff Fun - Want to increase your respect and weapons skill the easy way? Get as much ammo as possible and walk into a fast food place like Burger Shot or Pizza Shack. Eat something first, then start shooting or set off a fire. Your wanted level will be activated. Walk behind the counter and turn your back a minute and come back up front and you will find cops and sometimes new customers to shoot. The cops will not shoot back.

Girlfriends Are Flattered With Pictures - Get an extra point in dating by taking her picture.

Blue Hell - There are thin walls in SA. Sometimes you will notice them during play where you may see one level transposed upon another. In those spots are sometimes patches where if you hit it just right, you will take a little trip to hell. Other times, you will be spewed out somewhere else. The Cluckin' Bell has the easiest entry point if you get behind the counter and aim for the crack by the fryer and near the vent, just jump and run towards the wall at the same time until he gets stuck in the middle of the wall and nudge him down. It's best to have a parachute because it can be a long fall. Once in hell, you may get stars, but the cops after you cannot kill you although you can kill them off. You can also find oysters and horseshoes.

Badlands - As soon as you are dropped off at Angel Pines, you are given a camera that won't run out of film until after the mission is over. Head north and take the pictures before doing the mission.

The Da Nang Thang - Trying to shoot off all the people on the boat is pointless, you might reduce their numbers, but you will never get them all and you will lose all your weapons before you get on the ship. Don't worry, all is not lost. When your helicopter crashes, you will have just a knife. You will also have the ability to not get in any trouble whatsoever. Don't be in too much of a hurry to get on with the mission! Kill cops. Run over people. Set fires. Damage property. You can still get hurt and rival gangs will shoot at you, but you won't get any wanted level. While out and about, go to Ammu-Nation and buy some weapons before you head back to finish the mission. Find the oysters, even in the north island. Get a new haircut in a Las Venturas styling salon or new tattoos. Whatever you do, just don't fly over the Restricted Zone.

Easy Way To Spray Tags - Before you do the mission Tagging the Turf, eat as much as CJ can and pull up a map of the tag locations. During this mission, your spray can will never run out. So as you step out the car to do the tags, go around town and get all of them before you finish the mission. This beats having to wait for new paint to respawn.

Cruel Win At Chilliad Challenge - As the race starts, throw a grenade at your competition while you are still high up and eliminate them all (or use your sniper rifle). By the time you make it down the hill, your wanted level will be gone.

Rare Car Collection In the mission Are You Going To San Fierro, the Truth has a special van that you will never see again after you are settled in your garage. If you want to keep the van, start the mission, kill Truth, and steal it. Store it in one of your garages and save the game. Then go back to the mission.
